India Is Electrifying Its Roads. The Next Challenge Is Powering Them

India’s roads are quietly going through a major transformation. Cars, scooters, three wheelers and buses are increasingly making the shift from petrol and diesel to electricity. Electric vehicles are no longer something seen only in a few cities or discussed as a future possibility. They are becoming part of everyday mobility. But there is an interesting question hiding behind this transition. If millions of vehicles eventually run on electricity, where will all that electricity come from, and more importantly, can the power network deliver it when and where it is needed?

 

India’s electric vehicle journey has already picked up considerable momentum. According to government data, more than 10.6 lakh electric vehicles were sold in India during 2024 to 2025, showing how quickly electric mobility is moving from an emerging trend towards mainstream adoption. The government is also pushing charging infrastructure through initiatives such as PM E DRV, which aims to support the expansion of public charging facilities across the country.

 

Now imagine a typical evening in the future. People return from work, plug in their cars and scooters, offices start charging their fleets and electric buses head to their depots. Unlike filling a petrol tank, charging an EV means drawing electricity from the grid. If large numbers of vehicles charge around the same time, electricity demand can rise sharply in particular locations.

 

This makes EV adoption not just a transportation story, but an electricity story.

 

Charging speed makes the equation even more interesting. A regular charger can take several hours, while fast chargers can deliver considerably more energy in a much shorter time. That convenience comes with higher power requirements. As fast charging becomes more common along highways, at commercial hubs and in urban areas, the electrical infrastructure supporting these locations will have to evolve alongside the vehicles.

 

The challenge is not necessarily about producing enough electricity alone. It is also about getting that electricity to the right place at the right time. A charging station on a busy highway needs dependable power. A fleet charging hundreds of electric buses needs a reliable electrical connection. A residential neighbourhood where several households own EVs will gradually have a different electricity demand profile from one where almost every vehicle runs on petrol.

 

This means India’s EV transition will require more than charging stations. It will need smarter distribution networks, better load management, adequate transmission capacity and electrical infrastructure capable of handling changing patterns of demand.

 

There is also an interesting opportunity here. EVs could eventually become part of a smarter energy ecosystem. With technologies such as managed charging and vehicle to grid systems developing globally, electric vehicles could potentially be charged when electricity is more readily available and, in some cases, even contribute stored energy back to the grid. The vehicle may therefore evolve from simply being a consumer of electricity to becoming part of the wider energy network.

 

India’s electric mobility story is still being written. The focus so far has understandably been on increasing EV adoption, expanding charging infrastructure and making electric mobility more accessible. The next chapter will be about building the electrical backbone that can support this transition at scale.

 

And that backbone will depend on something often overlooked in the excitement around new vehicles: reliable electrical connectivity. As India electrifies its roads, homes, industries and transport networks, dependable electrical infrastructure will play a crucial role in keeping that transition moving.
