India Is Adding Renewable Power at Record Speed. But What Happens When the Sun Isn’t Shining

India’s clean energy story is moving faster than ever. Solar panels are appearing across rooftops, large renewable projects are coming up across the country, and renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important part of India’s power mix. As of March 2026, India had 283.46 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity, including 274.68 GW of renewable energy. Solar alone accounted for 150.26 GW, while wind contributed 56.09 GW. India has also achieved more than half of its installed power capacity from non-fossil sources, putting the country well on its way towards its 2030 energy goals.

 

But here is the interesting part. Solar power has one very obvious limitation. It works when the sun shines. A solar plant can generate impressive amounts of electricity during the day, but what happens when evening arrives and millions of homes switch on lights, fans, air conditioners and appliances? The sun is going down, but electricity demand certainly is not. Wind power brings a similar challenge because wind conditions can change. This is where India’s next big energy conversation begins. It is no longer only about generating more renewable power. It is about making sure that power is available when people actually need it.

 

That is why energy storage is becoming increasingly important.Think of energy storage as the power sector’s way of saving electricity for later. When renewable sources generate more electricity than the grid immediately needs, that surplus can be stored and used when generation falls or demand rises. Batteries and pumped storage hydropower can help bridge the gap between when clean electricity is produced and when it is required.

 

And this conversation is happening right now. The 12th India Energy Storage Week in August 2026 has brought energy storage, battery technologies, grid integration and the wider clean energy ecosystem into focus. The industry is increasingly looking beyond simply adding renewable capacity and towards creating a power system that can handle it efficiently and reliably. There is another piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked: the grid.

 

Generating electricity is only one part of the journey. That electricity has to travel across distances, move between regions and reach homes, businesses and industries at the right time. As renewable projects expand, transmission infrastructure and grid flexibility become increasingly important. Recent discussions around India’s next phase of renewable growth have specifically highlighted battery storage and transmission expansion as critical requirements.

 

The challenge becomes even more interesting when we look at India’s rising electricity demand. Peak power demand reached 270.8 GW in May 2026, while the evening supply gap widened to 3,045 MW. It is a reminder that producing electricity and delivering electricity when it is needed are two very different challenges.

 

So, what happens when the sun isn’t shining?

 

The answer is not one single technology. It is a combination of renewable generation, energy storage, smarter grid management and stronger transmission infrastructure working together.

 

India’s energy transition is therefore entering an exciting new phase. The question is no longer simply how much clean power the country can generate. The bigger question is how reliably that power can move from where it is produced to where it is needed.

 

And that is where dependable electrical infrastructure becomes crucial. Behind every renewable project and every transmission network is an ecosystem of components designed to carry power safely and efficiently. Quality cables may not be the most visible part of the energy transition, but they are an essential link in making it work.

 

As India builds a cleaner and more connected energy future, the real goal is simple: renewable power should not just be generated. It should be available, reliable and ready when the country needs it.Because the future of energy does not stop when the sun goes down. It keeps moving.
